EMD to deliver six GT46AC locomotives to Ferronor

Electro-Motive Diesel to deliver six GT46AC locomotives to Ferronor in Chile

August 5, 2013--LAGRANGE, Ill. – Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. (EMD) is pleased to announce the delivery of six meter gauge, international heavy-haul locomotives to Ferronor, representing over 50 years of technology advancements since the first EMD locomotive model GR12 was delivered in Chile.

“We are pleased that Ferronor selected the EMD GT46AC locomotive. The increased productivity and performance of our AC traction represents the latest in EMD technology. Compared to a six-axle DC locomotive, the AC traction system provides approximately 40 percent more tractive effort, allowing locomotive unit replacement and much improved life cycle cost,” said Billy Ainsworth, EMD chief executive officer.

To improve emissions and fuel economy, the 4,500 brake horsepower GT46AC locomotive offers a 16 cylinder 710G3C engine with electronic unit injection; variable speed cooling fans and traction motor blowers that optimize cooling while limiting parasitic load; and a split cooling radiator system. The self-steering trucks provide improved curve negotiation and wheel wear. To monitor the health of the locomotive, the IntellitrainTM system provides remote access to locomotive operation and performance, and the EM2000TM microprocessor control system provides complete self-diagnostics.

The GT46AC furthers the long and successful reputation of the GT series of locomotives, recognized for leading quality and performance in the rail industry around the world.
