Progress Rail Awarded Signaling Work for Tirana–Durres Railway Line in Albania

ECM S.p.A., a subsidiary of Progress Rail, a Caterpillar Company, and INC S.p.A., a subsidiary of FININC S.p.A. group, and a leader in the large infrastructure EPC sector in Italy, have signed the first turnkey project for modernizing the signaling system of a railway line in Albania.

This project and subsequent phases are part of a comprehensive modernization and update of the Albanian railway network to support the country’s economic development goals.

Progress Rail will supply the entire signaling system, which includes computer-based interlocking (HMR9), central post and ERTMS L1, and all trackside components for the 34.2 kilometers of track between Tirana Public Transport Terminal and the city of Durres, plus construction of approximately five kilometers of new railway line between Tirana and Rinas airport.

“This work is of strategic importance given the numerous investments foreseen in the Balkan Region, particularly in Albania,” commented ECM Managing Director Paolo Covoni. “Once preliminary documentation is finalized, our team will proceed with the design phase, factory testing, installation, testing and commissioning onsite in Pistoia and Genoa, followed by training courses on signaling systems for Albanian railway technicians.”
