Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company, has acquired Nitryx, a software and consulting company in Campinas, Brazil. Founded in 2011, Nitryx serves the transportation and supply chain industries with decision support systems focused on logistics optimization.
Through this acquisition, Progress Rail adds network optimization, yard planning, crew management and a rail movement planner to its Advanced Rail Technology (ART) solution suite. Progress Rail continues to improve its offerings of best-in-class solutions, as these technology investments enable lower-carbon emissions, improve customer productivity, and drive efficiency, yielding reduction in costs for customer operations.
The ART product family provides an end-to-end rail optimization suite that currently includes:
· EMD Joule™ battery switcher,
· Fuel savings through TALOS™ Energy Management, AESS and SmartConsist™,
· Predictive maintenance with PR Uptime™,
· Event recording, fuel monitoring and track inspection with PowerViewTM, and
· Automatic train operations via TALOS™ ATO products.
“We are excited to welcome the Nitryx team to Progress Rail and look forward to working together to execute our ART automation strategy and further develop products with our existing team,” commented Paul Denton, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing for Progress Rail. “Nitryx’s intense customer focus and core values align well with our company, which will allow an easy integration into our selling process.”
While currently offered primarily in Brazil, the company’s products are capable of supporting the North American Class I and global mining railroads with customer-specific customizations. With proven application in the rail industry, the Nitryx team holds expertise in mathematical algorithms, Artificial Intelligence and optimization, computer vision, Radio Frequency Identification, advanced sensor application, Internet of Things and logistics processes.
“Railroads are looking for technology investments to improve their efficiencies beyond what is captured in Precision Scheduled Railroading initiatives. With the addition of Nitryx, we can offer comprehensive automation solutions that improve our customers’ fuel efficiency, optimize network capacity, and meet sustainability and emissions goals,” Denton added.
Working alongside parent company, Caterpillar, Progress Rail is exploring and investing in alternate energy (low to zero carbon solutions), which includes liquefied/compressed natural gas (LNG/CNG), battery, hydrogen fuel cells, biodiesel, and other alternate fuel technologies. To date, technology driven solutions have been successful in the rail industry, offering year-over-year reduction in fuel consumption and emissions generated.
