Spanning nearly 60 years, Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, and Indian Railways (IR) have successfully worked together to deliver rolling stock solutions to the region. At a time when other locomotive manufacturers were unwilling to transfer modern technology to IR, our team effectively transferred state-of-the-art technology to Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi. This resulted in the local production of a fleet of more than 2,500 EMD diesel-electric locomotives, which are still valued today. These highly productive locomotives have an impressive availability and reliability rate and continue to operate in the region. Today, Progress Rail’s support includes delivery of freight and passenger locomotives to India, as well as technology and in-country support. Our team is now focusing its efforts on rail safety for the region, in addition to not only locomotive modernization, but also emissions improvements trackwork opportunities and alternative fuels such as natural gas.

Progress Rail also provides service support to locomotive facilities at multiple locations across India with a network of dedicated, support personnel. Locations include Hubli, Sabarmati, Jodhpur, Siliguri, Lucknow, Varanasi, Gooty, Krishna Rajpuram, Tughlaqabad, Pune, Itarsi and Raipur.
