Progress Rail’s proprietary Magnetostrictive UIT system is an electromechanical process where ultrasonic energy is converted into mechanical energy. When applied to metal/fabricated structures, the UIT process imparts compressive residual stress, mitigates harmful tensile stress and modifies weld toe geometry and improves grain structure.
The UIT process can be used in place of TIG Toe Dressing or Burr Grinding to modify weld toe geometry and impart beneficial compressive Residual Stress. Progress Rail’s proprietary Magnetostrictive (UIT) technology and application process is faster, easier to apply, more consistent and the safest option. These benefits translate into extended fatigue life for manufactured and repaired structures and components, such as; machined parts, weld repairs on frames, structures, buckets, truck bodies, bridges, light and utility poles, transmission towers, highway sign structures and many other types of fabricated structures. Progress Rail’s highly portable, 100% duty cycle industrial equipment is easily mobilized to remote job sites. Our extensive tooling options can be tailored to meet your application requirements. The Progress Rail UIT systems only requires 120 VAC power to create ultrasonic energy, provide true Hi-Frequency energy, at or above 25 kHz, strengthening the metal structure’s ability to withstand dynamic loading forces.
Progress Rail’s UIT-6000 was designed for shop and manufacturing operation. The 100% duty cycle system is an all-in-one system mounted on casters for ease of movement around the shop/manufacturing operation. The system features a robust Magnetostrictive transducer which delivers the strongest ultrasonic energy within the industry, operating at or above 25 kHz. This, coupled with extensive tooling options and ease of operation, the UIT-6000 system can address most any shop or manufacturing application.
The UIT-6000 system delivers the strongest ultrasonic energy to components and weldments, mitigating harmful tensile stresses while imparting beneficial compressive residual stress, ultimately increasing the fatigue strength and life of equipment. The portable hand tool can easily be positioned at the weld toe to improve weld toe geometry and impart compressive residual stress. The UIT-6000 can be used to mitigate localized tensile stress and help to control distortion resulting from welding. The UIT peening process can be applied as an in-process or post-process procedure.

Progress Rail's Ultrasonic Technology (UIT) can be used to mitigates the effects of Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC). The UIT process can be used on most materials susceptible to stress corrosion cracking to minimize and/or arrest the propagation of stress corrosion cracking. The UIT has been used successfully during weld repairs series 5000 aluminum and a variety of steels.
The UIT process can be used for localized weld stress relaxation w/o the application of heat. When the UIT process is applied to the surface of a weld, the UIT process neutralizes the tensile stress created during weld solidification and relaxes the welded structure reducing and/or eliminating distortion. In addition to minimizing distortion, the UIT process aids in dimensional control.
