Progress Rail Celebrates 125 Years of Manufacturing in Sandiacre, U.K.

November 5, 2021

SANDIACRE, Nottingham – Progress Rail is celebrating 125 years of manufacturing at its facility in Sandiacre, United Kingdom. Founded by the Taylor Brothers in 1896, the Sandiacre site was developed in the Nottingham area to meet the growing demand for specialized products to support the developing railway transportation network in the U.K. Over the past 125 years, the Sandiacre site has earned a reputation for providing high quality, sustainable, industry-leading switches, castings, crossings and associated products for Network Rail, London Underground and railways around the world.

“We are extremely proud of our U.K. team and local heritage,” remarked John Newman, Executive Vice President of Infrastructure for Progress Rail. “While we take time to celebrate our long history, our team’s focus is on the future. Our Sandiacre facility is critical to our mission of supporting Network Rail and other U.K. rail customers to build and maintain safe, reliable, and sustainable railways that contribute to economic prosperity by moving people and goods.”

In addition to Sandiacre, Progress Rail has a significant manufacturing footprint in the U.K., with facilities in Sheffield, Beeston, Doncaster, Longport and South Queensferry, Scotland, employing close to 700 people across the United Kingdom.

On October 11, 2021, Maggie Throup MP, Member of Parliament Erewash, visited the Sandiacre site to commemorate the anniversary and celebrate with employees.

“Over the years, I have been a passionate supporter of Progress Rail both locally and nationally on key issues, in particular, securing the skills and talent required to ensure a prosperous future for both the firm and our community here in Erewash,” commented Throup. “Progress Rail undertakes complex manufacturing at their U.K. facilities and is a significant supplier to U.K. rail infrastructure. I would like to congratulate the team on this important milestone, and I look forward to many more years of work at the Sandiacre site.”

Building on 125 years of success, the Sandiacre site continues to evolve, and with support from Progress Rail and parent company, Caterpillar, the company is investing in the future. With investment in new products, technologies, and services, Progress Rail strives to help customers build a better, more sustainable world. From apprentices to senior staff, the team is positioned to remain at the forefront of the rail industry for many years to come.
