Premier Provider of Locomotives since 1922
August 16, 2022
DEERFIELD, IL – Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the EMD® brand, which has been transforming the rail industry since 1922. Originally founded as the Electro-Motive Engineering Corporation, EMD is currently a product brand of Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company.
“EMD has a proud 100-year legacy of providing rail customers with proven technology and innovation,” said Marty Haycraft, senior vice president of Caterpillar and president and CEO of Progress Rail. “We’ll continue to develop new ways to deliver premier locomotives to our customers, and we look forward to another century of helping our customers build a better, more sustainable world.”
The first EMD locomotive was manufactured as a gas-electric locomotive railcar with 150 horsepower. Less than a decade later, the company started manufacturing diesel-powered locomotives, which cut travel times considerably and soon replaced steam locomotives.
During World War II, EMD manufactured engines for the U.S. Navy, and after the war, continued to manufacture locomotives for some of the nation’s largest railroads. In 2010, EMD was purchased by Progress Rail, allowing the brand to leverage global expertise and partnerships through Caterpillar.
Today, EMD has delivered more than 75,000 locomotives around the world, with single engine power ratings as high as 6,000 horsepower. The company also provides engines for the marine, drilling and power generation industries.
Progress Rail is continuing EMD’s legacy of advancing innovation in the rail industry by investing in new technologies. In 2021 Caterpillar announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with BNSF and Chevron to pursue a locomotive powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Progress Rail has also received multiple orders for its battery electric EMD® Joule locomotive, including orders by FMG and BHP for mining operations. In addition, many EMD locomotives are also capable of using up to 20% biodiesel blends.
