Signals & Communication
ENGINEERING & PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Progress Rail’s Signal Division engineers design CTC systems, interlockings and grade crossing warning systems, program vital processor applications, upgrade rail yards, perform preliminary engineering for commuter rail systems and provide field service and training. We are also a resource for turnkey project management, taking a project from material procurement through engineering design and field installation.
Progress Rail Services is currently working with several railroads on PTC upgrades to signal systems and PTC data radio message mapping. Whatever your PTC needs, whatever the size, our engineers are here to assist you.
PROGRAMMING & APPLICATIONS ENGINEERING
Progress Rail’s Signal Division has extensive experience in engineering and programming for both GETS and US&S products. Our facility is able to design/create software utilizing VALC, ACE 1.12, or ALP compiler for GETS products or US&S Development Tool 8.6 for US&S applications.
A variety of solid-state microprocessor devices, including EC5, EC4, VHLC and US&S Microlok II are components of our testing facility. In addition to performing standard verification tests in hardware simulation, we are able to provide testing for large, multiple processor ElectrologIXS simulations. Creating PTC mapping application programs utilizing the GETS PTC Configuration Suite is also a service we provide.
Through the use of a proprietary logic simulator, our engineers perform simultaneous integrated testing of 30 or more individual microprocessor locations on laptop PC’s. This unprecedented capacity allows for near subdivision-wide testing. Custom applications are fully simulated and verified prior to lab verification.
CROSSING & WAYSIDE STRUCTURES
Progress Rail’s Signal Division manufactures structures for automatic grade crossing warning systems, wayside signaling systems and any other unique system you might need. We also provide a variety of products and services for grade crossing and CTC applications. Our wire shop excels in the manufacture of top quality custom Local Control Panels and Cutover Test Panels designed to site specific locations. We also offer the latest in crossing recorders and monitoring, as well as Onsite – central management software to remotely monitor crossings. Whatever the size or the need, Progress Rail’s Signal Division can build it for you.
WIRING SHOP & LOCAL CONTROL PANELS
Progress Rail’s wiring shop facilities have the capacity to wire any size shelter as designed by our engineering staff or others. We also have the ability to design and build custom local control panels to meet your every need. Our shops are ISO-9001 certified and serve Transit, Class 1, Regional, Short Line, and Switching & Terminal Railroads. The wiring and testing includes point to point checks, ground checks and operational tests supported by documentation as required by the customer. Past projects range from a small wired case for a crossing project to forty (40) plus instrument houses ranging from 6’ x 6’ to 10’ x 14’ in size for both crossings and wayside signal systems. Our Louisville, KY facility is setup to accommodate all sizes and quantities of shelters and would appreciate the opportunity to take your most complicated designs and deliver you a wired and tested control panel, case, or complete shelter.
INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE
Progress Rail Services is a leader in the Rail Crossing, Signal Installation and Maintenance business. The Signal Division can provide field management and construction services for large, ongoing projects. We provide a turnkey approach, from survey through design and installation. We design, build and install on average 100 turnkey signal packages per year. We also offer contract services to maintain, test and supply material for highway railroad intersections. Progress Rail has continuing contracts with over 80 railroads and industries. We perform signal maintenance and inspection at approximately 1,000 crossings across the nation.
TRAIN INSPECTION SYSTEMS
Progress Rail Services’ Train Inspection Systems keep trains moving safely with a wide range of track-mounted equipment to aid in defect detection, diagnostics and train monitoring. Our systems are designed to monitor bearing temperatures, wheel temperatures (both hot and cold detection), inspect for dragging equipment and for high/wide/shifted loads.
Micro Hot Bearing Detector
The Micro Hot Bearing Detector (MicroHBD) inspects passing trains for bearing defects in order to prevent derailments and costly infrastructure damage
FUES EPOS
Fortunately, the FUES EPOS from Progress Rail offers precision wayside-based detection of hot bearings (including inboard bearings), hot wheels, and dragging brakes.
Micro Talker
Working in tandem with defect detection equipment, the Micro Talker monitors one or two tracks and reports real-time data to help reduce and eliminate derailments and increase overall safety.
Advanced Concept Scanner II
The Advanced Concept Scanner (ACS) incorporates the field-service proven capabilities of the ISO-CLAMP rail-mounted scanner with technological and design improvements for optimum accuracy, life-long reliability and minimal maintenance.
Micro ScanIR
The versatile MicroScanIR was designed for simplicity and accuracy, with a range of improvements in scanning technology. Its compact configuration fits into a 10-inch tie space, and meets AREMA standards for rail-mounted hardware
Dragging Equipment Detector (tie-mounted)
Protect your rolling stock, cargo, concrete ties and track structures from dragging equipment under a moving train with dragging detection technology from Progress Rail Services.
In-Tie Dragging Equipment Detector
Protect your rolling stock, cargo, concrete ties and track structures from dragging equipment under a moving train with dragging detection technology from Progress Rail Services.
ASSET PROTECTION
Let Progress Rail Services help protect your infrastructure investment using our range of asset protection solutions: from protecting the ties and track from damage caused by dragging equipment, to protecting high-values assets like bridges and tunnels using our high/wide load detections, Progress Rail can design an asset protection solution to meet your needs. These systems can be delivered as standalone systems or integrated into existing CTC systems.

High Wide Load Detector
Progress Rail Services designs and manufactures complete High/Wide Load detector systems. These systems utilize Infrared sensors to detect train clearance issues and can alert the train crew and operations centers before a train damages valuable assets like bridges and tunnels. This detector system can interface with Progress Rail's Hot Bearing Detector and Micro Talker equipment.
REMOTE MONITORING & DIAGNOSTICS
Progress Rail’s Signal Division is a leading provider of equipment and services to remotely monitor highway crossings and other wayside systems. Our latest recorder/monitor, the Event Analyzer can be used as a standalone recorder or integrated with other devices such as gate tip sensors, and Light Out Detectors to provide Crossing Performance Monitoring capability. Using the power and flexibility of OnSite, railroads can remote monitor their equipment in the field and be alerted when maintenance is required.
cRTU
Not only does it integrate seamlessly with On-Site for instant, 24-hour crossing monitoring, Event Analyzer is also engineered with future expansions in mind.
