The simple and robust design of our two-cycle engine has stood the test of time by adapting to new demands and requirements. We continue to build on this legacy, with a commitment to increased performance, durability, reliability and maintainability. 

Fixed Pitch:  Our two-cycle engine provides a large margin of available power above the demand curve to provide superior acceleration and responsiveness. By comparison, in the fixed pitch propeller applications, the available power of a typical four-cycle engine narrowly meets the propeller demand curve.

Controllable Pitch:  The additional power capacity of our two-cycle engine enables it to accept virtually any pitch at any rate, without overload. Four-cycle engine manufacturers limit available engine power to levels significantly below their engine's continuous rating in order to protect against engine overload.

Pump Applications:
  Our two-cycle engine is more responsive and productive with a lower cost single gear driveline. A four-cycle engine is restricted to operate in a very narrow range, compromising productivity and fuel consumption, requiring a second gear in the driveline.

Responsiveness:  Our two-cycle 710 engine is the most responsive in the world. With generator sets, testing proves our 5,000 horsepower 20-cylinder engine is able to accept full load in one step and recover speed in two seconds. Similar testing in marine applications has demonstrated acceleration from idle to full load in less than 11 seconds. By firing each cylinder once per revolution and benefiting from plentiful combustion air through our unique clutched turbo-changer design, the 710 engine is unique in its ability to smoothly accept load at any engine speed and at a rate no other medium speed engine in the world can match. 

Emissions:
  All 710 engines are certified for U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 2 as well as IMO Annex VI Tier 1, and we surpass IMO Tier 2. We are actively working on U.S. EPA Tier 4 and IMO Tier 3 standards, which are effective in 2014. Our two-cycle engine has responded well to the technologies required to meet these standards, and we expect to have more efficient and cost effective solutions due to inherent advantages over four-cycle engines.

V-CATALYST™ DIESEL OXIDATION CATALYST KIT

We constantly strive to improve the performance and reliability of our products and continue this tradition with the introduction of a new diesel oxidation catalyst kit specially designed for the unique requirements of EMD diesel engines. Known as the V-Catalyst™, this kit replaces the standard exhaust manifold on EMD 710, 645 and 567 engines used in rail, marine and stationary applications.
