Providing locomotive technology to meet global standards
The Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) business relationship with Indian Railways (IR) dates back to 1959 and includes delivery of freight and passenger locomotives to India, as well as technology and expertise behind the locomotives. At a time when other locomotive manufacturers were unwilling to transfer modern technology to IR, we successfully transferred state-of-the-art technology to Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi. This has resulted in the local production of a fleet of more than 1,300 EMD diesel-electric locomotives, which are deemed highly productive by IR, with an impressive availability and reliability rate, far superior to the other diesel locomotives in India. Additional locomotive improvements have been made to the WDG4 (GT46MAC) with the introduction of a new 4,500 HP IGBT AC traction variant.
EMD also provides service support to Indian Railways locomotive facilities at multiple locations across India with a network of dedicated service support personnel. Locations include Hubli, Sabarmati, Jodhpur, Siliguri, Lucknow, Varanasi, Gooty, Krishna Rajpuram, Tughlaqabad, Pune, Itarsi and Raipur.
