Jim Shirvinski is Senior Vice President of Engineering for the Locomotive & Railcar Services (LRS) group. Jim has overall responsibility for all engineering of Electro-Motive Diesel locomotives, new transit locomotives, Progress Rail locomotives with Cat® engines, as well as railcar engineering. Prior to joining Progress Rail in 2011 as the Director of Operations for the Muncie, Ind., facility, Jim held a variety of senior management positions, including Vice President of Manufacturing and General Manager for Union Tank Car Company.
Jim started his career with the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors in 1992, working for four years in the Forward Planning Group, as well as in the Manufacturing Engineering Group. In 1996, Jim joined Union Tank Car Company at the East Chicago, Ind., manufacturing plant as a Manufacturing Engineer and advanced to Chief Manufacturing Engineer. Subsequently, he was promoted to Manager of Quality Control and then Director of Manufacturing Engineering. In 2005, Jim relocated to Alexandria, La., to design and construct a new tank car manufacturing facility in Alexandria, La., responsible for its daily operations as well as Union Tank Car’s other manufacturing operations in East Chicago, Ind.; Sheldon, Texas; and McKenzie Valve Manufacturing in McKenzie, Tenn.
Jim is a graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. Jim served as an Associate Professor for Purdue University Calumet for two semesters, teaching Internal Combustion Engine Design.
